Eleuthera

5/09/15 – Upon entering Governors Harbor, we found 5 new looking mooring balls in the harbor. As we approached closer it was apparent that they did not have pendants and that attachment was by running your line through a ring at the ball. Lynne took one look and said She couldn’t do it so I had to try and grab it with her piloting. Eleuthra-0001Luckily we had one of those fancy Robship hook and mooring poles which we had to figure out how to use. Lynne took the helm for the first time to catch a ball. Needless to say, it took several attempts and the first time the pole was pulled from my hands but remained attached to the ball. I was able to take a regular pole and lift it up to recover it. After about the fourth or fifth try we securely moored. There is some question as to what this mooring might cost. One part of our guide says they belong to the government and are free. Another part says they belong to French Leave Resort and could cost us $30.00 to $50.00 a day. We tried contacting the French Leave Resort on VHF channel 16 with no answer and then via the phone numbers listed but they were wrong. We tried contacting the port Authority, also to no avail. We are just assuming they are free and if they are not someone is bound to come out wanting money. OH! Well, this is typical Bahamas communication. Ran into the same problem trying to contact a marina and fuel dock. They simply would not answer the VHF and phone numbers were wrong. So much for paying big bucks for travel guides.

5/10/15 – We took the dinghy to shore this morning and had someone waiting ashore in a golf cart. The water got shallow very quickly and we had to wade to shore pulling the dinghy. They welcomed us to Governors harbor and informed us the moorings were $30.00 a night no showers or other amenities. We were welcome to tie to there dinghy dock where the dinghy would be more secure. Quite decent of them I would say. We moved to their dinghy dock and they are arranging a rental car for us tomorrow. Today is Sunday and most everyone was in church which went on way past noon. Most everything is closed. We walked all over town then walked up the hill where all all the big old homes are. Some 140′ or more in elevation. On the way down we stopped at The Buccaneer for a late lunch and a few beers. It had great atmosphere with a resident rooster and cat. The cat was satisfied with petting but the rooster wanted a handout. Eleuthra-0084 Eleuthra-0078 Eleuthra-0076The sign said “do not feed the chickens” but I couldn’t wait until they weren’t looking. On the way back at the dinghy dock we stopped at the 1636 club for another Kalik beer (a dollar more than the Buccaneer). Kalik (pronounced KA-LIK) is the local beer of the Bahamas. Now we are on board having another beer (Bud Light that is).

5/11/15 – The roosters serenaded us this morning at dawn then at 6:30AM Loud church music and singing could be heard coming from a loudspeaker followed by a long sermon. This was coming from the tower of the Anglican Church.Eleuthra-0047 I could not fully understand the sermon but it was spouted in a hellfire and brimstone manner. It could be heard all over the town and further. It is 7:00AM and the sermon is still going on. Well singing is going on now so it must be about over. Spoke too soon, he has started the sermon again. The sermon ended at 7:10AM and now all is quite. So much for freedom from religion. First time Lynne got up before I had coffee made so I guess it created a minor miracle.
